2009 Windjammer Cruise

One more item to tic off my bucket list. Taking a trip on a sailing vessel.

The story

A copy of a war-time newsletter was reprinted and handed out at the Pine Village Alumna banquet this year (2009). It illustrated for me, how all encompassing this war was in our community. I realize I have never experienced a war with a REAL cause, and thus have I never seen our country united on any cause, as it was at this time.

The New England/Canadian Cruise

I subscribe to a weekly email from Travelzoo. This service highlights the best travel bargains for the week. The offerings are so tempting that I renewed my passport because I knew that something was going to come up that I couldn't resist. It happened last summer and the trip was a Royal Caribbean cruise to New England and Canadian ports over Labor Day week. My friend Kathleen agreed to go with me, and we took our folding bicycles along. It was great!

The Trip to Eaton's Ranch

One day a group of us at work were talking about vacations we had recently taken and the subject of "dream vacations" came up. I said that mine was to go to a "Dude Ranch". Their response to this 62 year old "dude" was, "Do it, Karen. Do it." I was surprised by their response. I believed I could still get up on a horse, but time was surely running out on that option, and so I decided to "do it".

Where to go? I knew I wanted it to be out west, and it came to me that I'd always thought the Big Horns in Wyoming was an especially beautiful range so I googled Big Horns and dude ranch. The one that came up was Eaton's Ranch near Sheridan, Wyoming. And the rest is history, as they say.

Letters written to Jenny Hazel Worley Kenworthy
All my life I was aware of a box of letters and other memorabilia belonging to Jenny Hazel Worley Kenworthy the mother of my mother (Elinor Elsie Kenworthy Allen) stowed in a trunk upstairs. Hazel, was born January 30, 1895 and died September 11, 1919, aged 24 leaving a 3 year old (Elinor Elsie, my mother) and an 18 month old son named Paul. Transcribing these letters has brought me a small glimpse of her life.

Correspondence of Elinor Kenworthy Allen - 1945
Mom's brother Paul (Pauly to her) was drafted into the Marines at the end of World War II. At the time he had three little boys. This link will take you to the letters she wrote him that summer just before the war ended, and the only two letters Dad ever wrote to her.

For several years I have been an AWAD (A Word a Day) subscriber. Every week-day a "new" word is emailed to me. I read its origin, definition and a couple sentences that use it. Also included is a quotation that I often find as interesting as the new word. Click on "Favorite Quotes" if you would like to read some of my favorites.
